Abstract

Interstitial lung disease is a chronic respiratory condition associated with progressive functional limitation and impaired quality of life. These clinical consequences may increase the risk of depression, which often remains under-recognized in routine respiratory care. Objective: To determine the frequency of depression in patients with interstitial lung disease presenting at Mardan Medical Complex. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 patients with interstitial lung disease aged 18 to 70 years from 27 December 2024 to 27 April 2025 at the Department of Pulmonology, Mardan Medical Complex, Mardan. The diagnosis of interstitial lung disease was established based on clinical features and chest examination. Patients already on antidepressants and pregnant or lactating women were excluded. Depression was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory, with a score exceeding 17 considered positive. Demographic and clinical data were recorded. Data were analysed using SPSS 27. Chi-square/Fisher exact tests were used for stratification, keeping the level of significance at 5%. Results: The mean age of the patients was 44.21±15.35 years, with the majority being male patients (62%), while females accounted for 38%. Hypertension was observed in 28% of patients, diabetes was present in 19% of patients, and 25% of patients were smokers in this study. The overall frequency of depression was 24% (n=24). Conclusion: The frequency of depression in interstitial lung disease patients in this study was 24%, underscoring the substantial psychological burden associated with this condition.
